Suggestions for places to visit near Monte Gordo:

•  Nature Reserve of the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Sto António Salt-Marsh: with its own Welcome Centre, here you will find an excellent site for observing birds and plants.

Vila Real de Santo António: on the banks of the Rio Guadiana, which separates Spain from Portugal at its mouth, the town is well-known for its geometric layout in the "Pombaline" style, and here you will find a wide range of shops and restaurants.

Castro Marim: as you head inland up the Rio Guadiana, you come to Castro Marim where the extensive views all around and into Spain combine with the history of the Castle of Castro Marim and the Fort of S. Sebastião.

Cacela Velha: one of the richest archaeological sites, where remains from the Roman and Arab periods are to be found, although it is thought to be Phoenician in origin. The view over the Ria Formosa is one of the finest in the Algarve. Take the opportunity to savour some of the famous locally-caught oysters.

Tavira: at the mouth of the Rio Gilão, a Roman bridge links the two sides of Tavira. Along with outdoor sitting areas, typical local restaurants and shops, discover the historical centre, the Castle and the Cathedral, and set off to explore the Algarve hinterland, with a mandatory visit to Pego do Inferno, the most famous waterfall in the Algarve.

Other places worth visiting: following the Guadiana to the North, you will come to Alcoutim on its banks, just a stone?s throw from the neighbouring Spanish town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana on the other side of the river. And in the Alentejo, you can discover Mértola and its rich historical heritage.
